Light Shining in Buckinghamshire, was published anonymously on December 5th, 1648 at a time when direct action was being taken to throw down enclosures in the County. Local experience no doubt informed its criticism of the existing order but it is also true that similar ideas were expressed across the country. There was widespread hostility to the monarchy, lords, Church, land owners and lawyers for their use of William the Conqueror’s ‘Norman law’ to rob the people of their natural rights. This, they contended, was in opposition to the word of God identified in ’Holy Scriptures’.
