Language is the essence of human communication, allowing us to express our thoughts, emotions, and ideas. Every language carries its unique cultural heritage and nuances that shape the way people perceive the world. Translations play a crucial role in bridging the gaps between different languages, fostering cross-cultural understanding, and enabling literary works to reach wider audiences.

One platform that is at the forefront of promoting new translations by contemporary poets is Facing Pages - a literary project dedicated to showcasing the beauty of translated poetry and the creative collaboration between poets from different languages and cultures. With its avant-garde approach and commitment to high-quality translations, Facing Pages has become a beacon of literary excellence.

Contemporary poets who engage in translation work bring their own unique voice and interpretation to the text, adding a layer of creativity to the process. These translations become a unique blend of the original poet's style and the translator's artistic choices, resulting in a new piece of literary art that stands on its own.

Facing Pages seeks to celebrate and promote these new translations, recognizing the invaluable contribution they make to the literary world. By providing a platform for contemporary poets, both established and emerging, to share their translated works, Facing Pages enables readers to explore the beauty of different languages and cultures through the universal language of poetry.

The Role of Cross-Cultural Exchange

One of the primary objectives of Facing Pages is to foster cross-cultural exchange through poetry. By highlighting the translations of contemporary poets, the project creates an avenue for cultural dialogue and understanding between different linguistic communities.

Through translation, poets have the opportunity to delve into foreign cultures, engage with their literary traditions, and form connections with fellow poets from around the world. These interactions and collaborations enrich their own artistic practices, allowing them to explore new ideas and perspectives.

Moreover, this cross-cultural exchange benefits readers by exposing them to a diverse range of voices and cultural perspectives. Poetry becomes a powerful tool for breaking stereotypes and promoting empathy by showcasing the universality of human emotions and experiences.

The Commitment to Excellence

When it comes to translation, maintaining the integrity and authenticity of the original work is of utmost importance. Facing Pages understands the intricacies and challenges involved in translation, and therefore, prioritizes the quality and accuracy of the translations presented on its platform.

The project collaborates with renowned translators who have a deep understanding of both the source and target languages, allowing them to capture the nuances and subtleties of the original poetry. These translators work closely with the poets to ensure that the essence and intent of the original work are faithfully preserved.

Facing Pages also strives to make translations more accessible by providing accompanying context and explanations. This empowers readers who may not be familiar with the source culture or language to fully appreciate and engage with the translated poetry.

Unveiling New Landscapes of Poetry

The impact of new translations goes beyond just the literary world. They have the power to challenge preconceived notions, break down linguistic barriers, and foster a deeper appreciation for the diversity of human expression. By showcasing the work of contemporary poets engaged in translation, Facing Pages invites readers to explore new landscapes of poetry, expanding their literary horizons.

Through its dedication to excellence, commitment to cross-cultural exchange, and celebration of new translations, Facing Pages has established itself as a leading platform for promoting the beauty and importance of translated poetry. This literary project encourages us to embrace the richness of different languages and cultures, reminding us that through poetry, we can transcend borders and connect on a deeper level.

So, dive into the world of translated poetry on Facing Pages, and embark on a journey that will open your eyes to the wonders of cross-cultural collaboration and the power of poetic expression.

They have inspired poets and challenged translators through the centuries. The odes of Horace are the cornerstone of lyric poetry in the Western world. Their subtlety of tone and brilliance of technique have often proved elusive, especially when--as has usually been the case--a single translator ventures to maneuver through Horace's infinite variety. Now for the first time, leading poets from America, England, and Ireland have collaborated to bring all 103 odes into English in a series of new translations that dazzle as poems while also illuminating the imagination of one of literary history's towering figures.

The thirty-five contemporary poets assembled in this outstanding volume include nine winners of the Pulitzer prize for poetry as well as four former Poet Laureates. Their translations, while faithful to the Latin, elegantly dramatize how the poets, each in his or her own way, have engaged Horace in a spirited encounter across time.

Each of the odes now has a distinct voice, and Horace's poetic achievement has at last been revealed in all its mercurial majesty. In his , J. D. McClatchy, the volume's editor and one of the translators, reflects on the meaning of Horace through the ages and relates how a poet who began as a cynical satirist went on to write the odes. For the connoisseur, the original texts appear on facing pages allowing Horace's ingenuity to be fully appreciated. For the general reader, these new translations--all of them commissioned for this book--will be an exhilarating tour of the best poets writing today and of the work of Horace, long obscured and now freshly minted.
