How to Automate Your WordPress Blog Website and Boost Efficiency

Running a successful WordPress blog requires consistent effort and valuable content. However, managing all the aspects of your website manually can be time-consuming and exhausting. That's where automation comes in. By automating various tasks, you can streamline your workflow, save time, and focus on creating engaging content for your audience.
Why Automate Your WordPress Blog Website?
Automating your WordPress blog website offers several benefits:
- Time-saving: Automating repetitive tasks allows you to allocate more time for content creation, marketing, and other essential activities.
- Improved efficiency: Automation eliminates human errors and ensures consistent execution of tasks.
- Enhanced user experience: By automating regular updates and maintenance tasks, you can provide a seamless experience for your visitors.
- Boosted productivity: With automation, you can accomplish more in less time, resulting in increased productivity overall.
Steps to Automate Your WordPress Blog Website
- Install and configure essential plugins: WordPress offers a wide range of plugins that can automate various aspects of your website. Popular plugins like Jetpack, Yoast SEO, and Akismet can handle tasks such as security, search engine optimization, spam filtering, and more.
- Schedule backups: Regularly backing up your WordPress website is crucial to protect your data. Utilize plugins like UpdraftPlus or BackupBuddy to automate the backup process and ensure your content is safe.
- Manage updates: Keeping your WordPress installation, themes, and plugins up to date is vital for security and performance. Enable automatic updates or use plugins like Easy Updates Manager to schedule updates on specific dates.
- Social media sharing: Promoting your blog posts on social media platforms is essential for driving traffic. Utilize plugins like Revive Old Posts or Buffer to automate the sharing process and reach a wider audience.
- Email marketing integration: Building an email list is crucial for connecting with your audience. Integrate your WordPress website with email marketing platforms like Mailchimp or ConvertKit to automate subscription management, email campaigns, and lead nurturing.
- Content curation: Finding relevant content to share with your audience can be time-consuming. Tools like Feedly or Pocket can help you automate content discovery, making it easier to find interesting articles and blog posts to share.
- Comment moderation: Managing comments on your blog can be overwhelming. Plugins like Akismet or Disqus can automatically filter spam comments, saving you the trouble of manual moderation.
- Performance optimization: Slow-loading websites can negatively impact user experience and SEO. Plugins like WP Rocket or Autoptimize can automate tasks like caching, minification, and image optimization to improve your website's performance.

Just over a year ago, from the date of writing this book, I created my Grab Free Stuff website. The idea was simple; I'd add posts to free items daily so that people could grab them. I had noticed that many similar sites had repetitive items on a lot of days; so I wanted to make sure I had at least one new free item daily. I also wanted to add items I did not see available on other sites.
What I didn't know then was how much time it would take. The initial posts took time, this was avoidable. On top of this though was the amount of time to post out to social media, create a daily newsletter and to monitor things such as spam comments, security and other items.
I felt that I had less and less spare time to create my posts, and seeing as the site was created and maintained around a full-time job, something had to be done.
So, I started to look at ways of automating as much of the site as I could. My daily posts could not be automated (although some can which I will talk about); but many of the other daily items I performed could be automated. I set about doing this and now, other than posts, my site over at http://www.grabfreestuff.co.uk is mostly automated.
I will show you in this book how I automated my sites consisting of a large percentage of my daily tasks; starting with the easy wins and moving to items such as social media, newsletters and site backups.
